Usually /usr/bin/perl …

You could also put “/usr/bin/env perl” in the shebang, which is probably more “correct”.

Have you tried “which perl” (assuming the host is a Linux or UNIX-like host)?

Are you trying to run the scripts as CGI scripts? Some hosts use different intepreters for that.

But actually you don’t have to use that stone age technology like DBM.
I’d suggest to use DBD::SQLite. It provides DBI interface, so you can run SQL queries, like with any other databases, like MySQL, Postgre or Oracle, also it has transactions etc etc.
Also, DBD::SQLite is easier to install.

I would imagine that you could use any number of languages to accomplish a content management system. The company I work for is quite large and has been quite successful using Perl to do all of the back end processing, such as content management. I have included a number of sites that might get you started. All of our developers use the O’Reilly books for learning as well as reference (link included below).

I would strongly suggest taking a beginning programming course. Be careful on that, because many beginning classes just show you how to put buttons on a MS Visual Basic form. That’s not what you want. Find a class that shows you how to sit down and write code.

If you want to teach yourself, find a PHP tutorial – like this one.

But, I think that these things are (usually) not all that useful, since what you want to do is start thinking in “Pythonic” terms (list comprehensions, iterators/generators, classes/objects and their associated special methods, exceptions, mutable vs immutable objects, etc). Plus, many of these lists of equivalent language constructs are written by somebody who is not fluent in one of the languages.

For books, I’d suggest something like “Learning Python, 3rd edition” by Lutz (wordy, and less of a reference than a series of lectures on the language), or “Python in a Nutshell”, which is better as a reference and also contains information on the many modules that Python comes with. Also, http://python.org/ has lots of good information, including tutorials and reference docs.

Coming from Perl, I suspect that one thing you may miss the most in Python is the rather clunky (compared to Perl) way it handles regular expressions.

I have been studying PERL very hard all quarter, and it seems like everything on the Internet is written by people who either don’t know what they are doing or are too smart to explain it to someone who is a beginner. I am trying to make a database for a fictitious site for a school project, where it keeps track of customers’ orders. Right now I have it so that a person can enter their order into the database, but I need to make a GUI where a webmaster can make alterations to the database and print up reports from searchs and invoices. I will be working on it all night tonight and all day tomorrow, but tomorrow night my college project is due. Help me if you can. I really want to get into CGI, both PERL and PHP. If your friend will help you, then perl is a good choice. You need to say what your webserver’s OS is to really answer where you should get Perl. However, if it is Windows, then ASPN perl is both free and a good source of information. If I need to do something particular, I type the question into a search engine. Typing Perl tutorial should get you many hits.

That all said, I would do the website in PHP. It is designed for this and would probably be easier.
